Urogynecology

Diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders, such as urinary incontinence and genital prolapse.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does urogynecology treat?

Conditions of the female pelvic floor, such as involuntary urine loss, overactive bladder, genital prolapse ("dropped bladder") and recurrent urinary infections.

Is it normal to leak urine when coughing or laughing?

It’s common, but it shouldn’t be considered normal. Urinary incontinence is treatable — from pelvic floor exercises to minimally invasive surgical procedures, depending on each case.

What is genital prolapse?

It is the displacement of pelvic organs, such as the uterus or bladder, toward the vaginal canal, usually due to weakening of the pelvic floor. Symptoms include a feeling of heaviness or a "lump" in the vagina.

Is treatment always surgical?

No. Many cases respond well to conservative measures, such as pelvic physical therapy and lifestyle adjustments. Surgery is indicated in specific situations, after individualized evaluation.

Is urinary incontinence an inevitable consequence of age or childbirth?

No. While age and childbirth are risk factors, incontinence should not be accepted as something natural: there are effective treatments to restore quality of life at any stage.
